Learn about this holly

Nellie R. Stevens Holly is a broadleaf evergreen with glossy dark-green leaves and a naturally pyramidal shape. It can provide year-round screening or stand alone as a landscape specimen.

Give it room: This is a large-growing holly, not a compact foundation shrub. NC State lists mature dimensions of 15–30 feet tall and 8–25 feet wide; growth varies with site and pruning.

Growing conditions: Full sun to partial shade, with acidic, well-drained soil. Avoid sites that stay wet. Water regularly while establishing; established plants tolerate heat and drought better.

Winter berries: It can fruit without a male holly, although a compatible pollinizer can improve fruiting. Berries are ornamental, not for eating.

What you’re ordering: Container-grown plants in 3-gallon pots. Choose the single plant or the two-pack. “3 gallon” describes the container size, not a guaranteed plant height. Landscape photos show mature growth, not the size delivered.
